Question & Answer
Can we perform Hajj al-Ifraad if we have done an Umrah in Shawal?

Respected brother Assalamu Alaikum, I am from Pakustan and living here in Jeddah as muqeem with my wife. Up to the month of Shawal, there was not in a clear situation that we will be able to perform Hajj this year. This situation was from the side of my company & Jawazat. So I keep in try to resolve this Issue. In between, we performed Umarah in month of Shawal then make a visit to Medina for Masjid e Nabvi & Roza e Rasool(PBUH). After two weeks, we were permitted to perform Hajj. We fulfilled all the requirements (Hajj company & hajj permit etc). Now problem is that as muqeem we want to perform Hajj e Ifraad but some people say that you can do only Hajj e tamattu due to performing umarah in shawal. Kindly guide me in this situation . "Jazakum Allah kher"

Answer:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

We begin with Allah’s blessed name, we praise him and we glorify him, seek his forgiveness and ask him to guide us. Whoever Allah guides, None can lead astray and whoever he misguides, None can guide. There is no power and no strength except from Allah, The most high, the Most great, the most powerful. We bear witness that there is no one worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers. We pray for peace and blessings on all the noble messengers and in particular on the last of them all “the blessed prophet Mohammad (pbuh)”

There are three ways of performing the Hajj:

  1. Hajj at-Tamattu (interrupted)
  2. Hajj al-Qiraan (combined)
  3. Hajj al-Ifraad (single)

Hajj at Tamattu : This means entering into Ihram for the Umrah during the months of Hajj (i.e. from the first of the month of Shawwal to the break of dawn on the tenth day of the month of Dhul-Hajj), then to take off Ihram after performing the ‘Umrah, and then again to enter into a state of Ihram for the Hajj, which should be done from Makkah or anywhere near to it on the 8th day of Dhul-Hajj during the same year in which the ‘Umrah was performed.

Hajj al-Qiraan This denotes entering into Ihram for both the Umrah and the Hajj at the same time during the months of Hajj, and not taking off the Ihram until the Day of Sacrifice (the 10th day of Dhul-Hijj), or first entering into Ihram for the ‘Umrah only during the months of Hajj, and making the intention of Ihram for the Hajj before beginning the Tawaaf of the Umrah.

Hajj al-Ifraad This signifies making Ihram for the Hajj during the months of Hajj from the prescribed station of Ihram (al-Meeqaat).

Dear brother, The majority of the scholars are of opinion that Hajj At-Tamattu or Hajj Al-Qiraan may only be performed by those whose household is not in the vicinity of Makkah and For those whose households are in the vicinity of Makkah, it is preferred that they perform the Hajj Al-Ifraad.

Dear brother, in your case you may perform, Hajj Ifraad, (means only Hajj with all of its rituals, except Qurbani as its obligatory ritual in both of the Hajj Tamttu and Qiraan) The Umrah you have performed in the month of Shawal shall be considered as the (nafl) voluntary Umrah and not a part of Hajj Tamattu or Qiraan; and this shall not be having any effect on their Hajj Ifraad. And Allah alone knows the best.

I ask Allah to make this a sincere effort, seeking his pleasure, and I ask him to grant us refuge in him from the evils within ourselves, and that in our deeds. I ask him to grant us success in achieving whatever pleases him; And May Allah Shower His blessings and mercy upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), his family and his Companions and on all those who follow him until the final hour.
