Question & Answer
Mother forgiving her children?

My mother once on a hospital bed said she has forgiven all of us (her children) and she eventually didn't die. She later died two years after that incidence. What is the position of the her forgiveness to us? May Allah (SWA) reward you.

Answer:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

We begin with Allah’s blessed name, we praise him and we glorify him, seek his forgiveness and ask him to guide us. Whoever Allah guides, None can lead astray and whoever he misguides, None can guide. There is no power and no strength except from Allah, The most high, the Most great, the most powerful. We bear witness that there is no one worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers. We pray for peace and blessings on all the noble messengers and in particular on the last of them all “the blessed prophet Mohammad (pbuh)”

Allah says in the glorious: Your Lord has enjoined the following: You should not worship anyone but Him Alone! Treat your parents with great kindness; if either or both of them attain old age, do not even say uff to them; nor rebuke them; but speak to them kind words. Treat them with humility and tenderness and pray, O our Lord, be merciful to them, just as they brought me up with kindness and affection in my childhood. Quran [17:23-24]

Narrated by Abu Umamah A man said, "O Messenger of Allah (saws), what rights can parents demand from their children?" He (saws) replied, "They are (or your relation with them will determine) your Paradise or your Hell." Al-Tirmidhi [Hadith 4941]

Narrated by Mu'awiyah ibn Jahimah Jahimah came to the Prophet (saws) and said, "Messenger of Allah (saws), I desire to go on a military expedition and I have come to consult you. He (saws) asked him if he had a mother, and when he replied that he had, he (saws) said, "Stay with her, for Paradise is at her feet." Al-Tirmidhi [Hadith 4939]

Dear brother, if you have treated your mother with love and care (after her forgiveness) then there is a hope that the merciful lord will accept your service to your mother and will reward you with best in this world and in the world to come.

The prophet guided the believers to continue in doing the acts of kindness after the death of one’s parents, as reported in these narrations:

Narrated by Abu Usayd Malik ibn Rabi'ah as-Sa'idi While we were with the Messenger of Allah (saws) a man of Banu Salmah came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah (saws)! Is there any kindness left that I can do to my parents after their death? He (saws) replied: Yes, you can invoke blessings on them, ask forgiveness for them, carry out their final instructions after their death, join ties of relationship which are dependent on them, and honour their friends. Abu-Dawood [ Book 41 : Hadith 5123]

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar Allah's Messenger (saws) said: The finest act of goodness is the kind treatment of a person to the loved ones of his father after his death. Sahih Muslim [ Book 32 : Hadith 6194]

And Allah alone knows the best.

I ask Allah to make this a sincere effort, seeking his pleasure, and I ask him to grant us refuge in him from the evils within ourselves, and that in our deeds. I ask him to grant us success in achieving whatever pleases him; And May Allah Shower His blessings and mercy upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), his family and his Companions and on all those who follow him until the final hour.
