بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

We begin with Allah’s blessed name, we praise him and we glorify him, seek his forgiveness and ask him to guide us. Whoever Allah guides, None can lead astray and whoever he misguides, None can guide. There is no power and no strength except from Allah, The most high, the Most great, the most powerful. We bear witness that there is no one worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers. We pray for peace and blessings on all the noble messengers and in particular on the last of them all “the blessed prophet Mohammad (pbuh)”

Narrated Abu 'Amir or Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari: that he heard the Prophet saying, "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful. " SHAIH AL-BUKHARI [vol. 7: book 69: No. 494]

The music can be determined to be permitted or prohibited on these conditions :

  1. If only ‘daff’ (tambourine) or chorus vocal effects are used as music, then there is no harm in listening such a music.
  2. If anything other than above are used to create music, such as string or wind instruments, then that music is haram.

Narrated by Abu Umamah The Prophet (saws) said, "Allah has sent me as a mercy to the universe and as a guidance to the universe, and my Lord, Who is Great and Glorious, has commanded me to annihilate stringed instruments, wind instruments, idols, crosses and pre-Islamic customs. My Lord, Who is Great and Glorious has sworn, 'By My might, none of My servants will drink a mouthful of wine without My giving him a similar amount of pus to drink, but he will not abandon it through fear of Me without My giving him drink from the holy tanks.'" Al-Tirmidhi [ 3654 ]

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud I heard the Messenger of Allah (saws) say: ‘Singing (of unlawful songs) produces hypocrisy in the hearts.’ Abu-Dawood [ Book 41 : Hadith 4909]

Nowadays some people take haram music as food of the soul. (We seek the Refuge of Allah from it). It can be true of those whose souls are overpowered by Satan because one who lives in filth is so used to it that one cannot live without it. May Allah protect us from such satanic occupations?

And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing, etc.) to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah without knowledge, and takes it (the Path of Allah, the Verses of the Quran) by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment (in the Hell-fire). Quran [31:6]

Dear brother, the listening of ‘haram’ music is forbidden not only while fasting but at all times, thus a believer should fear Allah and should absolutely abstain from what is absolutely forbidden or ‘haram’ in Islam.

Dear brother, listening to string music in Ramadan does not break ones fast, but is a greater sin, because fasting does not only mean refraining from eating or drinking, rather it means attaining piety or fear of Allah, and it means that all the body should abstain or refrain from transgressing any of the limit set by Allah. And Allah alone knows the best.

I ask Allah to make this a sincere effort, seeking his pleasure, and I ask him to grant us refuge in him from the evils within ourselves, and that in our deeds. I ask him to grant us success in achieving whatever pleases him; And May Allah Shower His blessings and mercy upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), his family and his Companions and on all those who follow him until the final hour.
