Question & Answer
Duties towards parents after their death?

As a children what should one do for parents who are no more in this world?

Answer:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

We begin with Allah’s blessed name, we praise him and we glorify him, seek his forgiveness and ask him to guide us. Whoever Allah guides, None can lead astray and whoever he misguides, None can guide. There is no power and no strength except from Allah, The most high, the Most great, the most powerful. We bear witness that there is no one worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers. We pray for peace and blessings on all the noble messengers and in particular on the last of them all “the blessed prophet Mohammad (pbuh)”

"And those who came after them say: `Our Rubb! Forgive us and our brothers who have preceded us in Faith.''' Quran [59:10]

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah said: "When a man dies all his good deeds come to an end except three: Ongoing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah), beneficial knowledge and a righteous son who prays for him." Sahih (Darussalam) Sunan an-Nasai [ Vol. 4, Book 30, Hadith 3681]

Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: "When a person dies, his deeds are cut off except for three: Continuing charity, knowledge that others benefited from, and a righteous son who supplicates for him." Sahih (Darussalam) Jami at-Tirmidhi [Vol. 3, Book 13, Hadith 1376/ Book 15, Hadith 57]

Continuing charity (sudkay jariyah) are ones own good deeds which somehow continue to exist even after ones death, eg a hospital, a mosque, a religious school or a well built by one continue to operate like a trust as traces of his activity in earthly life. The Islamic knowledge that one has spread during ones life, continues to benefit one after death. And the pious child who prays or supplicates for them, will benefit the deceased parents.

Thus the children should pray or supplicates as much as they can for their deceased parents. And Allah alone knows the best.

I ask Allah to make this a sincere effort, seeking his pleasure, and I ask him to grant us refuge in him from the evils within ourselves, and that in our deeds. I ask him to grant us success in achieving whatever pleases him; And May Allah Shower His blessings and mercy upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), his family and his Companions and on all those who follow him until the final hour.
