Obsession or obsessive compulsive disorder(ocd) is ruining my life?

Ocd is ruining my life. I have doubts on najis and being pure. I also have obsessive sexual thoughts which I don't want in my head. This cause anxiety. What can I do to stop this?

Answer:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

We begin with Allah’s blessed name, we praise him and we glorify him, seek his forgiveness and ask him to guide us. Whoever Allah guides, None can lead astray and whoever he misguides, None can guide. There is no power and no strength except from Allah, The most high, the Most great, the most powerful. We bear witness that there is no one worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers. We pray for peace and blessings on all the noble messengers and in particular on the last of them all “the blessed prophet Mohammad (pbuh)”

Obsession or obsessive compulsive disorder(ocd) is a behavior which represents maladaptive behavior in which an individual is hunted with the persistent recurrence of unwelcome, absurd and disturbing ideas or thoughts. Although one realizes the absurdity and irrelevance of such thoughts, still one is unable to get rid of them, the more one tries to rid oneself of them, the more they persist.

The remedy of the obsession is to turn to allah, remember allah as much as one can and seek refuge with him.

The obsession which tempts one to do a unlawful thing can have these sources: evil desire (Nafas) or devil. Allah says in the glorious quran:

And indeed We have created man, and We know what his ownself whispers to him. And We are nearer to him than his jugular vein (by Our Knowledge). Quran[50:16]

Then Shaitan (Satan) whispered to him, saying: "O Adam! Shall I lead you to the Tree of Eternity and to a kingdom that will never waste away?" quran[20:120]

"Who whispers in the breasts of mankind, "Of jinns and men." Quran[114:5-6]

I also have obsessive sexual thoughts which I don't want in my head.

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "Allah has accepted my invocation to forgive what whispers in the hearts of my followers, unless they put it to action or utter it." Sahih al-bukhari[volume:3, book:46, hadith:705 ]

Thus unless one puts ones thoughts in to action one will not be held accountable for these thoughts.

What can I do to stop this?

The antidote for the Obsession or obsessive compulsive disorder(ocd) is:

  1. Whenever any evil thought happens to pass through one’s mind, immediately seek refuge with Allah, and bring Allah into remembrance. Allah says in the glorious quran:

And if an evil whisper comes to you from Shaitan (Satan) then seek refuge with Allah. Verily, He is All-Hearer, All-Knower. QURAN[7:200]
Verily, those who are Al-Muttaqun (the pious), when an evil thought comes to them from Shaitan (Satan), they remember (Allah), and (indeed) they then see (aright). QURAN[7:201]

  2. Dear brother, The only thing that can take you out of or take you far far away from your obsession is the constant remembrance and obidance of allah.
  3. Dear brother know that the contentment to the heart or sole or mind can only be achieved through the rememberance of Allah.
  4. Be consistent in your supplications for Supplication is from the most beneficial types of healing, it is the enemy of illness and affliction repressing it and treating it, preventing its occurrence, removing it or at least alleviating it. It is the weapon of the believer.
  5. recite quran daily, and engage yourself in dhikr as much as is possible.
  6. engage yourself to seek knowledge of deen, for although the shaitan can gain power over the worshiper but not over one who has knowledge.
  7. engage your self in social activity, or play games or do some exercise to minimize the free time.

If it is too severe, then one need to consult a doctor. In conclusion: the more you remember Allah, the more you will be safe from the evil of shaitan. We pray to Allah to strengthen your Eeman and keep you in good health.

I have doubts on najis and being pure.

One should be certain about one being pure or impure, the doubts are from shaitan, and one should try ones best to not pay any heed towards ones doubts. And Allah alone knows the best.

I ask Allah to make this a sincere effort, seeking his pleasure, and I ask him to grant us refuge in him from the evils within ourselves, and that in our deeds. I ask him to grant us success in achieving whatever pleases him; And May Allah Shower His blessings and mercy upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), his family and his Companions and on all those who follow him until the final hour.
