بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
We begin with Allah’s blessed name, we praise him and we glorify him, seek his forgiveness and ask him to guide us. Whoever Allah guides, None can lead astray and whoever he misguides, None can guide. There is no power and no strength except from Allah, The most high, the Most great, the most powerful. We bear witness that there is no one worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers. We pray for peace and blessings on all the noble messengers and in particular on the last of them all “the blessed prophet Mohammad (pbuh)”
Narrated by Mu'adh ibn Jabal Some companions of Mu'adh ibn Jabal said: ‘When the Messenger of Allah (saws) intended to send Mu'adh ibn Jabal to the Yemen, he (saws) asked: “How will you judge when the occasion of deciding a case arises?” He (Muadh) replied: “I shall judge in accordance with Allah's Book.” He (saws) asked: “(What will you do) if you do not find any guidance in Allah's Book?” He replied: “(I shall act) in accordance with the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws).” He (saws) asked: “(What will you do) if you do not find any guidance in the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws) and in Allah's Book?” He replied: “I shall do my best to form an opinion and I shall spare no effort.” The Messenger of Allah (saws) then patted him on the breast and said: “Praise be to Allah Who has helped the messenger of the Messenger of Allah to find something which pleases the Messenger of Allah.” ABU DAWOOD [Book 24 : Hadith 3585]
Dear brother, in Islam if any matter is to be decided, we should first consult glorious Quran and indeed there are things about which the glorious Quran is silent.
If the Quran is silent about any matter, then we should consult the sunnah of the blessed prophet Mohammad (pbuh) (i.e. what he (pbuh) taught and practiced).
But still there are things that were not existent at the time of the prophet Mohammad (pbuh); in this way the Sunnah is silent on many issues.
Thus if both the Quran and Sunnah are silent on any issue, the scholars of Islam would form an opinion within the guidance of Quran and Sunnah.
There is no doubt that smoking is one of the evil, unwholesome and hazards things, which is responsible for many diseases like:
According to World Health Organization (WHO), "Each year, tobacco causes about 3.5 million deaths throughout the world and this will increase to 10 million annual deaths during the 2020s. And alone in china, the annual tobacco deaths will reach up to two million by 2030.
According to World Health Organization (WHO), globally tobacco kills up to half of its users.
The smoking came into existence centuries after the death of our beloved prophet(pbuh), thus nothing is specifically mentioned in quran or sunnah about smoking being haram or halal.
The glorious quran (which is the main source of guidance) is specific in some matters and general in some matters. and we will analyze the quranic statements about causing harm to one’s own health and body.
Allah says in the glorious Quran:
O ye who believe! Eat not up your property among yourselves in vanities: but let there be amongst you traffic and trade by mutual good-will: nor kill (or destroy) yourselves: for verily Allah hath been to you Most Merciful. Quran [4:29]
And spend of your substance in the cause of Allah, and make not your own hands contribute to your destruction, but do good; for Allah loveth those who do good. Quran [2:195]
They ask you, [O Muhammad], what has been made lawful for them. Say, "Lawful for you are [all] good foods and [game caught by] what you have trained of hunting animals which you train as Allah has taught you. So eat of what they catch for you, and mention the name of Allah upon it, and fear Allah." Indeed, Allah is swift in account. Quran [5:4]
Allah being our well-wisher, commands us not to destroy or cause harm to oneself, which means that we should take care of our health and body.
Allah says in the glorious Quran: And give the relative his right, and [also] the poor and the traveler, and do not spend wastefully. Quran[17:26]
Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful.Quran[17:27]
The smoking is indeed the wasting of wealth, plus contributing to one’s own destruction, thus both the ways one is going against the clear command of Allah.
Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: The Prophet said, "There are two blessings which many people lose: (They are) Health and free time for doing good." SAHIH AL-BUKHARI [ Book 8 :: Volume 76 :: Hadith 421]And Allah alone knows the best.
I ask Allah to make this a sincere effort, seeking his pleasure, and I ask him to grant us refuge in him from the evils within ourselves, and that in our deeds. I ask him to grant us success in achieving whatever pleases him; And May Allah Shower His blessings and mercy upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), his family and his Companions and on all those who follow him until the final hour.Ask Your Question
