Question & Answer
Can a women be considered mahrem for another women?

Hello sir, I want to know can a women be considered mahrem for another women in order to travel, I mean can I and my friend travel together and become mahrem to each other

Answer:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

We begin with Allah’s blessed name, we praise him and we glorify him, seek his forgiveness and ask him to guide us. Whoever Allah guides, None can lead astray and whoever he misguides, None can guide. There is no power and no strength except from Allah, The most high, the Most great, the most powerful. We bear witness that there is no one worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers. We pray for peace and blessings on all the noble messengers and in particular on the last of them all “the blessed prophet Mohammad (pbuh)”

Abu Hurairah narrated that The Messenger of Allah said: “A woman is not to travel the distance of a day and a night unless she is accompanied by someone who is a Mahram.” (Sahih) tirmidhi[Vol. 1, Book 7, Hadith 1170]

Dear sister, In Islam a Mehram is only the husband or a male to whom marriage is absolutely and permanently prohibited.

can a women be considered mahrem for another women in order to travel?

Dear sister, A woman cannot be a mehram for another. The one who is considered mehram is a man that a woman cannot marry due to blood relations, such as her father and her brother, or a man related to her due to marriage, such as her husband, her father-in-law and her step-son, or a man related due to breast feeding, such as her father from breast feeding and so forth.

I mean can I and my friend travel together and become mahrem to each other?

Narrated by Abu Huraira The Prophet (p.b.u.h) said, "It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to travel for one day and night except with a Mahram." Sahih Al-Bukhari [Volume 2 : Book 20 : Hadith 194] And Allah alone knows the best.

I ask Allah to make this a sincere effort, seeking his pleasure, and I ask him to grant us refuge in him from the evils within ourselves, and that in our deeds. I ask him to grant us success in achieving whatever pleases him; And May Allah Shower His blessings and mercy upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), his family and his Companions and on all those who follow him until the final hour.
