Answer:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

We begin with Allah’s blessed name, we praise him and we glorify him, seek his forgiveness and ask him to guide us. Whoever Allah guides, None can lead astray and whoever he misguides, None can guide. There is no power and no strength except from Allah, The most high, the Most great, the most powerful. We bear witness that there is no one worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers. We pray for peace and blessings on all the noble messengers and in particular on the last of them all “the blessed prophet Mohammad (pbuh)”

Dear sister, there are two opinions amongst the scholars about the number of rakahs in the taraweeh prayer in Ramadan.
1. Tarawe prayer is eight rakahs.
2. Tarawe prayer is 20 rakahs.

1. Tarawe prayer is eight rakahs.

The scholars who say that the tarawe prayer should be eight rakahs, base their opinion on this narration.

Narrated Abu Salama bin 'Abdur Rahman: that he asked 'Aisha "How was the prayer of Allah's Apostle in Ramadan?" She replied, "He did not pray more than eleven Rakat in Ramadan or in any other month. " SAHIH AL-BUKHARI[Volume 3, Book 32, Number 230]

Means 8 rakahs tarawe + 3 rakahs witr. This is the Sunnah that has been related from the Messenger of Allah.

Abu Ya'la and at-Tabarani record, from Jabir that Ubayy ibn Ka'b (r.a.) came to the Prophet (saws) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have done something last night," (i.e., during Ramadan). The Prophet said: 'And what was that, O Ubayy?' He said: The women in my house said, 'We don't recite Qur'an [well or much] so can we pray behind you?' I prayed eight rak'at and the witr prayer with them.
The Messenger of Allah (saws) was pleased with that and did not say anything."

2. Tarawe prayer is 20 rakahs.

Yahya related to me from Malik that Yazid ibn Ruman said, "The people used to watch the night in prayer during Ramadan for twenty- three rakas in the time of Umar ibn al-Khattab." Malik Muwata[Book 6, Hadith 5 / Arabic: Book 6, Hadith 251]

Means 20 rakahs tarawe + 3 rakahs witr.

The majority of scholars prefer to follow the established way of the Rightly Guided Khalifahs.

At-Tirmizhi says: "Most of the people of knowledge follow what has been related from 'Umar and 'Ali and other companions of the Prophet, [i.e., that they prayed] twenty rak'at. And this is the opinion of al-Thauri, Ibn al-Mubarak, and ash-Shaf'i. And so I found the people of Makkah praying twenty rak'at."

It can never be even imagined that the rightly guided khalifahs would have ever gone against the Sunnah. They were the men who followed the Sunnah in letter and spirit.

Your statement: some people say that its biddah to pray 20 rakahs, which i think is not true because ahle sunnah follow the Prophet saw and the khulafa-e-Rashideen.

Narrated Irbad ibn Sariyah: Al-Irbad said: One day the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) led us in prayer, then faced us and gave us a lengthy exhortation at which the eyes shed tears and the hearts were afraid. A man said: Apostle of Allah! It seems as if it were a farewell exhortation, so what injunction do you give us? He then said: I enjoin you to fear Allah, and to hear and obey even if it be an Abyssinian slave, for those of you who live after me will see great disagreement. You must then follow my sunnah and that of the rightly-guided caliphs. Hold to it and stick fast to it. Avoid novelties, for every novelty is an innovation, and every innovation is an error. ABU-Dawud [ Book 40 : Hadith 4590]

In the above narration the blessed prophet(pbuh) said: You must then follow my sunnah and that of the rightly-guided caliphs.

Thus if any one follows the rightly guided khalifahs, one would indeed be following the command of the blessed prophet(pbuh), and following the command of the beloved prophet(pbuh) cannot be considered a bidah.

If just for the sake of argument, one were to claim that it was Hadrat umar(r.a) who started this, it would have been incumbent upon the believers to follow this practice, from this command of the blessed prophet(pbuh): You must then follow my sunnah and that of the rightly-guided caliphs.

I want to know that is my thought sahih.

Yes, indeed you are right sister.

how many rakahs should we pray in taraweeh.

One can pray either eight or twenty rakah, because both ways, one would be following the words of the Messenger of Allah (saws).

However if one prays behind the imam then the best thing would be to pray the number of rakahs the imam prays. And Allah alone knows the best.

I ask Allah to make this a sincere effort, seeking his pleasure, and I ask him to grant us refuge in him from the evils within ourselves, and that in our deeds. I ask him to grant us success in achieving whatever pleases him; And May Allah Shower His blessings and mercy upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), his family and his Companions and on all those who follow him until the final hour.
