Question & Answer
Should we pray only eid prayer on Friday?

This year the eid came on Friday, and there was a lot of discussion going on among people about have we to offer both Friday & eid prayer or only eid prayer, and it caused a lot of confusion among us, so I want you to answer this?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

We begin with Allah’s blessed name, we praise him and we glorify him, seek his forgiveness and ask him to guide us. Whoever Allah guides, None can lead astray and whoever he misguides, None can guide. There is no power and no strength except from Allah, The most high, the Most great, the most powerful. We bear witness that there is no one worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers. We pray for peace and blessings on all the noble messengers and in particular on the last of them all “the blessed prophet Mohammad (pbuh)”

Narrated AbuHurayrah: The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Two festivals ('Id and Friday) have synchronised on this day. If anyone does not want to offer the Friday prayer, the 'Id prayer is sufficient for him. But we shall offer the Friday prayer. Abu-dawood[book:3, Hadith: 1068]

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: Ata' ibn AbuRabah said: Ibn az-Zubayr led us in the 'Id prayer on Friday early in the morning. When we went to offer the Friday, he did not come out to us. So we prayed ourselves alone. At that time Ibn Abbas was present in at-Ta'if. When he came to us, we mentioned this (incident) to him. He said: He followed the sunnah. Abu-dawood[book:3, Hadith: 1066]

Narrated Zayd ibn Arqam: Ilyas ibn AbuRamlah ash-Shami said: I witnessed Mu'awiyah ibn AbuSufyan asking Zayd ibn Arqam: Did you offer along with the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) the Friday and 'Id prayers synchronised on the same day? He said: Yes. He asked: How did he do? He replied: He offered the 'Id prayer, then granted concession to offer the Friday prayer, and said: If anyone wants to offer it, he may offer. Abu-dawood[book:3, Hadith: 1065]

Thus from the above guidance of our beloved prophet Mohammad(pbuh), it is clear that when ever the eid falls on Friday, a believer who attends the eid prayer can leave the Friday khutba and prayer if he wish to do so, However if one wishes to offer both the Eid as well as the friday prayers, there is no harm. But Those who wish to attend only Eid prayers on Friday, should pray the normal 'dhuhr' prayers if they choose not to attend the Jumuah or Friday 'khutba' and prayer. And Allah alone knows the best.

I ask Allah to make this a sincere effort, seeking his pleasure, and I ask him to grant us refuge in him from the evils within ourselves, and that in our deeds. I ask him to grant us success in achieving whatever pleases him; And May Allah Shower His blessings and mercy upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), his family and his Companions and on all those who follow him until the final hour.
